How to Play Minecraft with Friends for Free (Java Edition)
You can play Minecraft: Java Edition with friends for free in five main ways: open your world to LAN if everyone is on the same network, share your single-player world over the internet with a mod such as Essential or e4mc, use a free host such as Aternos or Minehut, run the free official server software on your own PC, or use Shulkerboxes (free Java Edition hosting, invite-only, in the US, Spain, Germany, Mexico and Brazil). LAN and mods are quickest when the host is playing anyway. A hosted server lets friends play while the owner is away. Each free option costs something other than money: a PC left on, ads, queues, player slots, or your gameplay data.
The options at a glance
| Option | Works over the internet? | Host must be online? | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| LAN (Open to LAN) | No, same network only | Yes, the host’s game is the server | One house, one Wi-Fi |
| Essential mod | Yes | Yes | Quick sessions in a single-player world, up to 8 players at once |
| e4mc mod | Yes | Yes | The same, and friends join with a normal, unmodded game |
| Free hosts (Aternos, Minehut) | Yes | No | Casual groups that accept ads and limits |
| Self-hosting | Yes, with port forwarding or a tunnel | The PC must stay on | Someone with a spare PC |
| Shulkerboxes | Yes | No | Friend groups in the US, Spain, Germany, Mexico and Brazil who are comfortable with gameplay recording |
Looking for an invite button? As of 7 October 2026, the Java Edition friends list can add friends and show who is online, but it cannot join a friend’s world: Mojang removed that in 26.2 Pre-Release 1. See where the invite button went.
What free costs you
Free services pay for servers somehow. This is what each option asks of you instead. Facts about each service come from its own pages, checked on 6 October 2026.
| Option | Queue | Player slots | Ads | Your data |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LAN | None | Limited by the host’s PC | None | Stays on your network |
| Essential | None | Up to 8 connected at once | None listed; it sells optional cosmetics for Essential Coins | Its privacy policy (last updated 28 October 2024) lists your Minecraft UUID, IP address and usage data, and says it does not sell your personal information |
| e4mc | None | Limited by the host’s PC | None | Connections pass through e4mc’s relay; it describes itself as a reverse proxy |
| Aternos | Yes, when its servers are full; you confirm at the front | Unlimited, per its site | Yes: Aternos says it is financed by ads | It asks users to turn off ad and tracking blockers on its site |
| Minehut | None stated; its site says servers wake the instant a player tries to join | 10 on the free Starter plan, with 1 GB RAM | Yes, per its cookie notice | Its cookie notice says it uses cookies to show ads |
| Self-hosting | None | Limited by your PC | None | Stays on your PC |
| Shulkerboxes | Players who choose to play unrecorded may wait in line at busy times | Check before you join | None | Gameplay is recorded and de-identified into AI training datasets licensed to other companies; chat only if you opt in |
Option 1: LAN, for friends in the same house
- Open your single-player world.
- Press Esc and choose Open to LAN.
- Pick the game mode for friends and whether to allow commands. If you leave Port Number empty, the game picks a random port and shows it in chat.
- Start the LAN world. Friends on the same network see it in their Multiplayer list.
LAN works only on the same local network, usually the same Wi-Fi or router. The world is online only while the host is playing.
Option 2: Essential or e4mc, for friends in other houses
Both are mods the host installs. Neither needs a server or port forwarding.
- Essential. Choose Host in the Essential menu, pick the world, choose Start Hosting, then invite friends with Add Members. Its wiki says up to 8 players can be connected at the same time and the host has to stay online because the host’s game is the server. For a modded world, everyone needs the same mods.
- e4mc. Install it on the host’s game (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt), then choose Open to LAN as normal. A public address appears next to the local port. Friends join that address with a normal game; they don’t install anything.
Anyone who has the address can try to join, so keep online mode on and use a whitelist. For more tunnel options, such as playit.gg, see playing without port forwarding.
Option 3: a free host
A free host runs the server for you, so friends can play while you’re away.
- Aternos says it is free forever and supports plugins, mods and modpacks with unlimited slots. Its help center says it is financed by ads, uses a start queue when its servers are full, and stops empty servers after a countdown.
- Minehut has a free Starter plan with 10 player slots and 1 GB of RAM, and plugin upload. Free servers sleep when empty and wake when a player joins. Its cookie notice says ads keep free servers free.
- FalixNodes has one free server per account with no slot cap and supports Paper, Forge, Fabric and modpacks. Free servers sleep after a stretch of inactivity, and anyone with the address can wake one with its Start Server tool.
- Play Hosting has free servers with 3 GB of RAM, 10 GB of storage and no slot limit, plus a modpack installer. Free servers start through a queue that its help center says takes a few seconds to a few minutes.
See Aternos alternatives for more free hosts compared, and Aternos queue too long? if its queue or stop countdown gets in the way.
Option 4: self-host on your own PC
- Download the official Java Edition server software from minecraft.net. It is free; you need Java installed.
- Put it in its own folder and run it once. It creates
eula.txt. Seteula=truein that file to accept the Minecraft EULA, then run the server again, and check it works by joininglocalhostfrom your own game. - Run it on a PC that can handle it. The example command on minecraft.net gives the server 4 GB of memory.
- Let friends in from outside your home: minecraft.net says you may need to open port 25565 on your router. If port forwarding fails, you may be behind CGNAT; see playing without port forwarding.
Friends can play only while that PC is on. Mods and plugins are up to you, because it is your server.
Option 5: a hosted server
A hosted server keeps the world online without your PC. Besides the free hosts above, Shulkerboxes is free for groups in the US, Spain, Germany, Mexico and Brazil with an invite. Two paid options are close to free for a while:
- Realms has a one-month free trial for new subscribers, then $7.99 USD a month for Java, and continues unless cancelled. See Realms alternatives.
- exaroton has a trial without a payment method, then charges 1 credit per GB of RAM per hour the server runs.
How to whitelist your friends
A whitelist means only the players you list can join. It is the simplest way to make a private server. On your own server or a host, type these in the server console (or in chat, as an operator, with a / in front):
whitelist onturns the whitelist on.whitelist add Steveadds a friend. Use their exact Java Edition username.whitelist listshows who is on it.whitelist remove Stevetakes someone off.
Operators can always join, even if they are not on the list. To kick players who are already online but not on the list, set enforce-whitelist=true in server.properties. A friend who is not on the list sees “You are not whitelisted on this server!” when they try to join. Realms works differently: only players you invite can join.
How to share the address
- Copy the address exactly from your host’s dashboard or tunnel. Don’t retype it.
- If the address has a port, keep it:
example.host.net:25570. Without a port, the game uses 25565. - Send it in your group chat.
- Each friend opens Multiplayer, clicks Add Server, pastes the address and clicks Done. The server stays in their list.
If the first join on a sleeping server fails, wait about a minute and try again.
Troubleshooting
- Friends get “Connection timed out”. Check the server or LAN world is running and the address is right. See the timeout guide.
- Friends see “Outdated client” or “Outdated server”. Everyone must run the same game version. See the outdated server guide.
- The LAN world doesn’t show up. Check everyone is on the same network, or type the host’s local address and the port shown in chat.
Where Shulkerboxes fits (and doesn't)
Shulkerboxes is free Minecraft: Java Edition hosting for a friend group, with no ads, no credit card and no port forwarding. A server wakes up when a friend joins and is ready in about a minute. It is invite-only with a waitlist and open in the US, Spain, Germany, Mexico and Brazil. It is free because gameplay is recorded and de-identified into AI training datasets that are licensed to other companies, and chat is recorded only if you opt in (how it’s free). Every player sees a notice before playing and chooses to play recorded or unrecorded. Servers run Paper with built-in homes and /tpa, and your saved world is yours to download. Modpacks and custom plugins are not supported, and Bedrock players cannot join, so if your group needs those, pick a host that supports them.
Have an invite code? Enter it on the home page. No invite yet? Join the waitlist and we will save you a spot.
FAQ
Can you play Minecraft Java with friends for free?
Yes. LAN, the Essential and e4mc mods, free hosts such as Aternos and Minehut, and self-hosting all cost no money. Each has a trade-off: the host staying online, ads, queues, or player limits.
How do I play Minecraft with friends on the same Wi-Fi?
Open a single-player world, press Esc, choose Open to LAN, and start it. Friends on the same network see the world in their Multiplayer list.
How do I play with friends in another house without a server?
Install Essential or e4mc on the host's game. Essential invites friends from its menu, up to 8 at once; e4mc gives a public address that friends join with a normal game. The host must stay online.
Can friends play when the owner is offline, for free?
Only on a hosted server, such as a free host or Shulkerboxes, or on a server running on a PC that stays on.
What is the catch with free Minecraft servers?
Free hosts pay for servers somehow. Aternos says it is financed by ads and uses a queue when full; Minehut's free plan shows ads and has 10 slots; Shulkerboxes records gameplay for de-identified AI datasets.
Do my friends need to pay to join my Minecraft server?
No. Joining is free on LAN, a tunnel, a free host and Realms. Only the Realms owner pays the subscription. Each friend does need their own copy of Minecraft: Java Edition.
Do I need to port forward to play with friends?
No. A mod such as Essential or e4mc, a tunnel such as playit.gg, a hosted server and Realms all work without port forwarding. You only need it to host from your own PC without a tunnel.
How do I make my Minecraft server private?
Turn on the whitelist with /whitelist on and add each friend with /whitelist add followed by their username. Only listed players and operators can join.
How many friends can join a free server?
It depends on the host. As of 6 October 2026 Minehut’s free plan has 10 player slots, Aternos advertises unlimited slots, FalixNodes and Play Hosting list no slot limit, and Realms for Java allows you plus 10 players at once.
Can friends on Bedrock join a Java server?
Not on Realms, which is one edition only. Some free hosts, such as Minehut, FalixNodes and Play Hosting, offer Java and Bedrock crossplay. Check the host’s page before you pick it.
What is the default Minecraft Java server port?
25565, over TCP. If your server uses another port, friends add it to the end of the address after a colon.
Can I use the Java friends list to play with friends?
Not to play together, as of 7 October 2026. The friends list adds friends and shows their status, but joining a friend's world was removed in 26.2 Pre-Release 1 and 26.3 did not restore it. Use LAN, a mod such as Essential or e4mc, or a server.
