Privacy Policy
The short version
- Shulkerboxes is free Minecraft hosting. It is free because we record gameplay and license de-identified datasets built from it to other companies.
- Every player sees a notice and chooses Let's play or Play unrecorded. Unrecorded players are not recorded. Chat is recorded only if you opt in.
- Licensed datasets use a random id instead of your username or Minecraft id. They never include IP addresses, emails, skins, or chat from players who did not opt in.
- No ads, and we don’t sell your account email or contact details.
- Wherever you live, you can ask for a copy of your data, a correction or deletion. Email support@shulkerboxes.com.
This summary is for convenience. The full policy below is what applies.
1. Who we are
Shulkerboxes is free hosting for Minecraft: Java Edition servers. It is operated by Adaptive Perception, Inc. (“we”, “us”). This policy covers the Shulkerboxes website, owner accounts and every server we host.
2. How Shulkerboxes is free
Shulkerboxes is free because of gameplay data. We record gameplay on every Shulkerboxes server. We use the recordings to build datasets for training and evaluating AI systems, and we license those datasets to other companies. That pays for the hosting.
3. Information we collect
- Account. Your email address and the account id your sign-in provider gives us.
- Minecraft identity. The Minecraft username and id of players you add to your server, and of players who join it.
- Your server. Its settings and its saved world, including anything players build or write in it.
- Gameplay recordings. Player positions and actions, blocks placed and broken, inventories, and the world files over time, tied to each player’s Minecraft identity. Chat is recorded only for players who opt in.
- Notice decisions. Which version of the notice each player saw, and whether and when they accepted it.
- Logs. When the website and servers were used, and from which IP address.
- Waitlist. Your email address, your answers about what you want to play, and which link or campaign brought you to the site, if you join the waitlist. If you later create an account with the same email, we connect the two.
We use PostHog (US) to measure how the site is used: pages viewed, sign-ups and whether a server was created, tied to a random id and the invite tag you came in on, never to your name or email. No cookies are set for this.
On the sign-up and server-setup pages we also record how the page is used, mouse movement and clicks, with anything you type hidden, so we can see where people get stuck. This is tied to the same random id and never to your name or email.
We also measure whether a server you own was joined, how many people played on it together and for how many hours, tied to the same random id and never to your name or email.
4. Signing in with Google
If you sign in with Google, we only get your email address and basic profile from Google, never your password. We use them only to sign you in and to contact you about your server.
5. How we use information
- To run your server, let the right players in, and bring your world back if something breaks.
- To keep the service secure and stop abuse.
- To tell you when your server is ready, or when something about it or the service changes.
- To build AI datasets from gameplay recordings and license them to other companies, as described in section 6.
6. Gameplay recordings and datasets
Every player sees the notice when they join a Shulkerboxes server, and chooses Let's play or Play unrecorded before they play. We ask again only when the notice changes. Chat is recorded only for players who opt in.
The datasets we license are de-identified. Each player appears under a random id that is different in every dataset. Datasets never include usernames, Minecraft ids, IP addresses, account emails, skins, or chat from players who did not opt in. We keep skins privately, for our own research. Companies that license a dataset agree by contract not to try to identify anyone in it.
7. How we share information
We share information only in these cases:
- Datasets. De-identified datasets, licensed to other companies as described in section 6.
- Service providers. Servers and saved worlds run on Google Cloud in the US. Accounts and server records are in Supabase in the US. The website is served by Vercel.
- Legal reasons. When the law requires it, or to protect players, the service or the public.
- Change of ownership. If Adaptive Perception, Inc. merges or is acquired, this information moves to the new owner under this policy.
We don’t sell your account email or contact details to anyone. We don’t show ads.
8. How long we keep it
We keep your account data while your account exists.
When you delete a server, we keep its saved world for 30 days, then delete it, unless you download it or ask us to delete it sooner.
Deleting a server does not remove gameplay already recorded on it. Those recordings go into datasets only in de-identified form, without usernames, Minecraft ids, IP addresses, skins, or chat from players who did not opt in.
Any player can ask us to delete the link between their Minecraft identity and their recordings by emailing support@shulkerboxes.com. We delete it ourselves 24 months after a player's last join.
9. Your rights, wherever you are
9.1 Rights everyone has
Wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- Access. Tell you what personal information we hold about you and how we use and share it, and give you a copy.
- Correct. Fix information about you that is wrong.
- Delete. Delete your information, including the link between your Minecraft identity and your recordings.
- Portability. Send your information in a common, machine-readable format. Want your saved world? Download it from World files in your server's Settings.
- Object or opt out. Stop recording you, or stop using your information for a purpose you object to. Stop being recorded any time: type /recording off. You keep playing.
- Complain. Tell us first, and if you are not satisfied, the privacy regulator where you live.
To make a request, email support@shulkerboxes.com. We answer within 30 days. We may ask you to confirm that the account or Minecraft identity is yours before we act, and someone you authorize in writing can ask for you. A world is shared with the other players on it, so we’ll explain what we can hand over or remove. If we turn down a request, we say why, and you can appeal by replying to our answer; we answer an appeal within 45 days. We don’t treat you differently for using any of these rights.
9.2 The trade
Shulkerboxes is free in exchange for recorded gameplay. Recorded players go first on full servers. Unrecorded players may wait in line at busy times.
9.3 California
If you live in California, the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, gives you the right to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose, to correct it, to have it deleted, to opt out of its sale or sharing, and not to be discriminated against for using these rights. To opt out, email support@shulkerboxes.com; you can also choose Play unrecorded in the game. The free service in exchange for recorded gameplay (section 9.2) is a financial incentive under California law. You join it by choosing Let's play. Leave it any time with /recording off.
