Is Minecraft Realms Worth It in 2026?
Minecraft Realms is worth it if your group wants Mojang’s own server with no setup, plays without mods, and never has more than 11 people on at once. Realms for Java Edition costs $7.99 USD a month for you plus 10 players at the same time: about $0.73 a player a month if 11 of you split it, or $95.88 a year for the owner. On Bedrock, Realms costs $3.99 a month for you plus 2 players, and Realms Plus $7.99 for you plus 10. Friends play free, they can play while you are offline, and you get three world slots and backups. It is not worth it if you need mods or plugins, more than 11 players at once, an older Minecraft version, or Java and Bedrock players together: Realms does none of those. If the price is the problem, free hosts and Shulkerboxes run a Java server for a friend group with no subscription.
1. What Realms costs
| Plan | Edition | Price a month | Players at once | Each, if split evenly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Realms for Java | Java | $7.99 USD | You + 10 | About $0.73 |
| Realms (Core) | Bedrock | $3.99 USD | You + 2 | About $1.33 |
| Realms Plus | Bedrock | $7.99 USD | You + 10, plus Marketplace Pass | About $0.73 |
Only the owner pays. Invited friends play free, and you can invite up to 10,000 of them; the limit is how many play at the same time. These are minecraft.net’s US prices, charged monthly until you cancel. Its fine print offers a 1-month trial to new Realms subscribers that renews at the then-current price unless cancelled. The Minecraft Wiki adds that Java Realms is also sold as one-time 30, 90 and 180-day packages at the same monthly rate.
Over a year, Realms for Java is 12 × $7.99 = $95.88.
2. What you get
- A server Mojang runs. No software to install, no port forwarding. minecraft.net lists the server as available around the clock, and invited friends can play your active world even when you are not online.
- Three world slots, and you switch the active one with a few clicks. A slot can be replaced with one of your own single-player worlds.
- Backups. Java Realms makes a backup every few hours while players are online, and each one can be downloaded as a single-player world.
- Invites by name, and since 26.3 on Java, invite codes.
- Premade maps and minigames on Java, picked and reviewed by Mojang.
- A region setting: automatic, by the first player’s ping, or a fixed region.
3. The limits
- No mods or plugins. Java Realms cannot install either, and worlds cannot use experimental settings. Data packs work if you add them to a single-player world and upload it.
- Latest version only. A Realm runs the current release, so the group cannot stay on an older version, and everyone updates when Mojang does.
- 11 at once. You plus 10 on Java and on Realms Plus; you plus 2 on Bedrock Realms (Core).
- Idle players are kicked after 15 minutes, which ends AFK farming.
- Java and Bedrock are separate. Realms for Java plays on Windows, Mac and Linux; Bedrock Realms on consoles, mobile and Windows. One Realm cannot hold both.
- Vanilla only. No Paper, so no built-in homes,
/tpaor server-side tools.
4. When Realms is worth it
- Your group plays vanilla Java (or Bedrock) and wants no setup at all.
- Friends often play when the owner is not around.
- Up to 11 people play at the same time, never more.
- Someone is happy to pay $7.99 a month, or the group splits it.
- You want backups and world slots managed for you.
5. When Realms is not worth it
- You want a modpack, Fabric or Forge mods, or plugins.
- More than 11 people play at once.
- The group mixes Java and Bedrock players.
- You want to stay on an older version.
- Nobody wants a subscription: free options exist with their own limits.
6. Alternatives to Realms

The Realms alternatives guide compares these in more detail.
Where Shulkerboxes fits (and doesn't)
Like Realms, Shulkerboxes runs the server for you and friends can play while the owner is offline. Unlike Realms, it costs nothing and runs Paper with homes and /tpa. Like Realms, it has no modpacks or custom plugins, and it is invite-only.
Shulkerboxes is free Minecraft: Java Edition hosting for a friend group, with no ads, no credit card and no port forwarding. A server sleeps when empty, wakes up when a friend joins and is ready in about a minute, and friends can join while the owner is offline. It is invite-only with a waitlist and open in the US, Spain, Germany, Mexico and Brazil. It is free because gameplay is recorded and de-identified into AI training datasets, and chat is recorded only if you opt in (full explanation). Servers run Paper with built-in homes and /tpa, and your saved world is yours to download. Modpacks and custom plugins are not supported, and Bedrock players cannot join, so if your group needs those, pick a host that supports them.
Have an invite code? Enter it on the home page. No invite yet? Join the waitlist and we will save you a spot.
